What is Rummy?

Rummy as in simple terms can be stated as a group of matching card games. Its gameplay is based on getting similar cards in sets which can be of 3-4 cards. The matching is done based on the same rank, sequence or suit. The main objective of the game is to obtain melds which consist of sets, three or four of a kind of the same rank or runs, three or more cards in sequence, of the same suit. If a card is discarded by a player making a run in the discard pile then that card cannot be taken up without taking all the cards below the top card from the pile.

History of Rummy

Conquian, A Mexican game is considered to be ancestral to all Rummy games by David Parlett, which itself is a derivation of an ancient Chinese game called Khanhoo. This play of drawing and discarding to obtain melds is a part of Chinese card games at least in the early 19th century, and perhaps as early as the 18th century. Rummy games are quite popular in India. It is considered that Indian Rummy is an extension of Gin Rummy and 500 Rum, which originated from the United States of America.

Variations of Rummy

Many variations of this card game prevails all over the globe. Basic Rummy is also known as Sai Rummy. There exists another type which is known as Sanka Rummy. The one played in India is called Indian Rummy. There exists a common set of features among all these types which resonate with the basic game. In simple terms, Basic game being the background or origination other types are slightly modified to add some interest and uniqueness.

Rummy Gameplay

In the game, a standard deck of 52 cards is used ranging from 2(low) to A(high). Rummy is flexible to a fixed number of scores or, to a fixed number of deals. All Rummy games are based on melding i.e. forming valid combinations of sequences and/or sets. A player picks a card and then discards it on his/her turn to achieve the goal. The one who gets successful in melding his/her cards before all others is considered to be the winner of the game. This game is usually played between two, three or 4 players. With slight modifications, this game can be open to five players at a time. After all more players add more fun.
